Small Talk

A friend spotted me at Ngee Ann last week.

She: Hi! How are you?

Me: Why do you ask?

She: I just wanted to see if you're okay or not...

Me: So what if I'm okay or fine?

She: Then that's good...

Me: What's so good about being fine? What if I'm not fine?

She: Then that's no good...

Me: Why is that no good?

She: ...

Me: Must we always feel okay?

She: Well...

Me: Can't we feel bad every now and then?

She: ...

Me: Do you realise that if we're feeling good all the time, then we wouldn't know that we're feeling good. And if we don't know that we're feeling good, we're really not feeling good anymore?

She: Well I...

Me: Anyway, I'm fine today. *smiles*

She: Get lost!

ROFL. I always say that if there is nothing bad happening around, life must be good. I guess i will 'hum tum' you if you answered me like how you answer her!

So, how are you?

dollie, why do you ask how I am? Is it because you're really concerned and interested, or is it just because it's the polite thing to say, or you have nothing else of substance to say, or is it something you ask automatically without thought when you meet people? And so what if I'm fine or not fine? Would that make a difference to you? Would you be happier if I'm fine, or sadder if I'm not, or is it really quite inconsequencial?

I'm fine thank you.

p.s. some people claim that I drive them nuts. I wonder why.

'how are you' is just a greeting..a "polite thing to say" for most people...i mean...generally people ask 'how are you' but don't expect 'you' to rant about how 'your' life sucks, or that 'you' have a terminal illness (gasps!), won the lottery etc. It's actually quite an impersonal greeting tt even cashiers n sales stuff give (at least in most western countries) and u are not likely to tell them all ur personal life details are u?? dun take it so seriously lah, it's a greeting prob equivalent to what a lot of older folks ask "have u eaten?" once they see you (see how food conscious our culture is?? ok i digress)...

note: 'you' refers to anyone tt is addressed the greeting

xena: Naw whatsofunny??

em: Good thinking there. Don't take it seriously? So often people make small talk without taking each other seriously. Idle banter. It's just something you're expected to do in a social gathering, so you won't appear so aloof and unsociable. 3 seconds later, neither party will remember anything about the conversation.

FF: Why not? Are you not concerned about my wellbeing? Or you really don't care? *sulks*

bubb: Poor thing? I'd think that getting a boring fine-thank-you response is more pathetic =)

And why do you ask if I've eaten? If I haven't, are you going to do something about it? Or are you hoping that I'd ask you the same question so that you can tell me that you haven't eaten and expect me to do something about it?

calm one: you've been reading too much heavy stuff. go get a life.

calm one: but i already have a life!

calm one: there's more to life than reading and talking to yourself on your own blog.

calm one: speak for yourself!!
